The Logistics of Back-to-School

Back to Schoolby Maureen Gerlach, Marketing Assistant

Next month, my baby sister will head off to college – hours from home, on her own for the first time, away from the watchful eyes of Mom and Dad. She can’t wait.

For the last few weeks she has been window shopping for dorm supplies, scoping out every back-to-school ad, clipping coupons, and making lists. She’s also asked her sage big sister for advice on what to bring. I’ve told her to make sure she absolutely needs everything she’s packing, and to give some thought to how she’s going to store all this stuff. Dorm rooms are tiny, shared spaces, and having too many supplies without good ways to store them can cause a lot of unnecessary stress and tension.

Our industry is built on helping organizations store and move materials as efficiently as possible. Schools and universities face challenges when it comes to storing archives, supplies, furniture, and equipment. Wildeck has been proud to help schools such as Berkley College of Music, Georgetown University, Trinity High School, and Assoc. of American Medical College provide great education by removing the stress of how to manage excess material.

It’s too bad my sister can’t pack a mezzanine to create space in her dorm room!

Bottlenecks May Affect Retailers Seasonal Support

Contributed by: Kelly Kamlager, Marketing Specialist

Today, I came across the word bottleneck when reading material handling industry headlines.

DC Velocity had a great post by industry veteran, Chris Kane, on Distribution in the retail sector. As retailers begin to ramp up for holiday season sales, bottlenecks in the shipping lanes and distribution centers can short the stock of stores and leave shelves empty.

The difficult economic times have forced last months have had many businesses to increase focus on eliminating waste and producing products in efficient environments. It is survival – tighten belts and “put noses to the grindstone.” While retailers strive to eliminate waste, they have to be cautious to still continue to support their stores and keep their products on the shelves. Just as we here at Wildeck are focusing on LEAN and more efficient means to manufacture our products. Coincidentally, Wildeck mezzanines, VRCs, and safety guarding products can increase the efficiency, safety, and capacity of retail distribution centers and stores.

When the prime retail holiday season arrives, we can all hope the headlines referencing bottlenecks will speak of significant improvements and increased retail sales. With proven material handling solutions from Wildeck, the season can really be bright.

Not East of the Mississippi

Contributed by: Jim Hathaway, Sales Specialist – Guarding Products

I remember growing up and my dad talking about a particular beer, made in Colorado, that he could only get west of the Mississippi. He loved that beer (maybe this explains my own passion for beer). I believe its limited distribution had to do with pasteurization. The brewery couldn’t get it to Wisconsin fast enough and it would go bad. This was the way it was back in the day.GER_J15_with_demo_freight_train

As a manufacturer in the Midwest, we experience some freight issues also. The cost of shipping our products to the west coast can take our competitive advantages away.

Wildeck is utilizing a more efficient and economical way to ship products to remote locations with intermodal shipping. Our products are loaded into a 53-foot container, then taken to a rail yard and loaded onto a train. It is shipped to a terminal near the customer’s facility and then trucked to the final destination.

A major bonus to intermodal shipping is that it is greener than our traditional flat bed methods. One train produces fewer emissions than several trucks.

Did you know drinking beer is green also? The recycling factor, if you know what I mean.
